After spending more time than I should have, I finally found a version of emacs that I like for my mac. Will this still run ok with Tiger? I don't know how backwards compatible mac stuff is, and honestly I get more out of emacs than I would out of widgets/spotlight...

a text editor.

it's a unix program, but it has been ported to os x so that you have a graphical interface/windows. os x comes with a version of emacs, just type emacs at the terminal.

You should be asking the developer, not us.

Well this question can apply to more than just this...I mean with windows if you write something that runs on win98 odds are xp and any future windows will be able to run it. Is there less backwards compatability with macs?

Some things break, but something like Emacs is not likely to. Usually, the things that break are hacks, very low-level, or relying on new technology that Apple hasn't quite hammered out yet. Most apps are completely unaffected.

Emacs is not likely to break, particularly not if you're using a CLI version. At most, you might need to recompile it, but if you're familiar with emacs then I'm guessing this wouldn't be a problem for you.
