Hello,
I have just spend the past two hours searching Google, the Apple website and download.com and have not been able to find any application that converts MP3 files to RM (real media) files for Mac. Is is possible that such an application does not exist for Mac? Insanity!
Even Real Media's own program only comes fro Windows or Linux.
Anyhow, does anyone know of any program or know of any place were I could look for such a program?
Thanks very much!!

LOL! I'm a web developer and need to offer some streaming audio on one of my client's sites.
I suppose if I can stream using Quicktime that would be just as well. Is Quicktime streaming just as good and is there a native quicktime streaming format (the equivelant of .rm on Real Media)?

Using Quicktime streaming has always worked just as well as Real Player streaming for me. I don't know anything about setting up files to be streamed, so I can't help you there.

Well... the Real Media Export plug-in is for exporting, not converting existing files, as I understand it and the propgram I am working with (Audacity) is not supported. The program seems to be geared towards the more Pro audio and video developers, which is not me.
I might just get a program like SoundGrinder that can export as a low-quality Quicktime file. Does anyone have experience with streaming Quicktime files? If I export as a low-quality file is it generally pretty quick to begin playback on a 56K connection and is it good at streaming? Any thoughts?
I have had great experience with Real Media on all sorts of connections in the past when I was developing on a PC, but I am willing to give Quicktime a try.
On another note, I think this might be a nice market gap for software developers to fill. I am quite surprised that I was unable to find any program that would let me quickly convert MP3 to RM files... unless I am missing a program!
Thanks much for your help!

I was on 56K until recently, and low-quality QuickTime worked fine for me — better than low-quality RealPlayer, actually, which would still intermittently drop out for some reason.

Eh? Care to explain the difference? I just installed it and converted an MP3 to .rm in less than 3 minutes using QT Pro, and that while I was eating noodles. iMovie can import MP3 files, right? Just import it to iMovie if you don't have QT Pro, export to Quicktime, select Expert, Realmedia and fix the settings.
Unless you want to do batch-converting or something. Though I'm pretty sure there are utilities that can do that.

RealPlayer 10 for Mac OS X can also convert QuickTime-playable files to rm files. Once the Real 10 Export component is installed, RealPlayer provides an "Export to RealMedia" menu item whenever RealPlayer has opened a QuickTime-compatible file.
However, RealPlayer normally plays back MP3 files with the open-source Helix engine, not with QuickTime. You can force it to play an mp3 file using QuickTime by choosing Open Location from RealPlayer's File menu, dragging the mp3 into the Open Location dialog, then typing <video/quicktime> (including the angle brackets) to the right of the mp3 file's path in the dialog. RealPlayer will then play the file back using QuickTime, and will enable its Export to RealMedia menu item in the player's File menu.
