Tiger Mail - color coded categories?

Does anyone using Tiger know if it supports color coded categories? I'm currently using Entourage, and would love to switch to Mail2 for Spotlight searching. But I still rely on the color coded categories of Entourage (and my Palm).

If it doesn't support categories, is there some other way to label mail into groups? (for example, there might be 10 different domains that I would all like to group into the category "research")

Thanks for any advice

You can make rules to color the images that come in, though I'm not sure how helpful that would be, if any.

You could also make smart folders for terms such as 'all mail from emaildomain.com and subject contains 'purple' or the like, to group mail.

Maybe with a paradigm shift in my thinking I could do it the way PurpleGiant said.

Or maybe picking up on OptimusG4's idea, I could define groups in Address book and use a rule to color the message and move it to a special folder.

But if spotlight is really really fast and good, I may not even have to create subfolders.

I'm looking forward to getting Tiger (should be tomorrow) and then I'll transfer my mail from Entourage. We'll see.

Thanks guys.

Along the same lines, I really wish there were a way to tag mail in Mail.app 2.0 with keywords, or comments, or categories, or... or anything, really. There's the flag, I guess, but that's all.

Makes the Smart Folders much less useful, because they can apply only to characteristics the email already had when it arrived, rather than metadata you add yourself

But you could just as easily create a standard folder to hold these messages, and manually move them. That is fewer steps than manually tagging mail and then applying a rule.

My original post referred to mail automatically getting categorized based on the category of the sender, and I'm either going to do that using Smart folders (if a rule can be set up that refers to a group in Address Book) or using a rule if I'm not able to set up the Smart folder the way I'd like.

If the Smart Folder idea works with groups, I might just save into subfolders based on projects and then allow Smart Folders to categorize by Address Book groups.

Been running Tiger for a day or two now and yes, there's an option in Mail 2.0 Smart Folders that says "Sender is Member of Group" with the list of groups corresponding to your Address Book groups. Very handy indeed. And yeah, it is fast enough so I don't bother with subfolders now.

It's really pretty cool, but I do wish there were a way to tag email with multiple keywords that I add myself instead of based just on what's already in the email.

Panther Mail can colorize mails. Is that what you are asking for?

I don't know whether Tiger Mail still can do that, but I doubt that they removed this feature.

I think that the virtual folder with "sender is a member of a group" is what I'm really looking for. That is really great - can't wait for my Tiger now.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

Can someone tell me if Tiger Mail allows for the partial downloading of IMAP messages? Panther Mail seems to download everything from .mac, and i'm on slow line in a war zone. Would be nice to be able to see only the first 20K or so and download the attachments if I want. Would be easier on my bandwidth.

Thanks!

Chris - I recognise your name....

You can't do this for IMAP, only for POP. But, I think you can treat .Mac as if it were a POP server: ie define an account as a POP mailbox, but put in the .Mac settings.

Gee4orce: Thanks for the advice. I used to use .Mac as a POP service, but went back to IMAP so I could protect my email in case of a crash or something worse. Entourage allows me to download only the first 20k or so. So the new Mail doesn't address this problem. That's a pain...

That's it.

You can set a rule (in preferences) to color the text of a message according to what group it belongs. when you create that rule, you have the option to apply it to open mail folders.

Ok, so I might finally switch to mail...
