I've started using the .mac application Backup to run back-ups to Apple's servers. Would also like to use it to burn larger back-ups to CD. I've been using Retrospect Express, but it looks like Danz wants me to upgrade to the full, expensive product.

Each time I've tried using Backup to CD, it seems to want to write a whole new back-up set. Doesn't it recognize (as it does when it writes to the .mac server) that some of the files have already been backed up and not changed, and skip rewriting them?

Anyone have experience with Backup to CDs and DVDs?

Backup is pretty unintelligent when it comes to certain things. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no way to solve your problem.

I hate how it doesn't remove items from the backup when they no longer exist in the source. I ended up making my own solution to this problem. You may want to consider looking at other apps.

Unfortunately, Backup is pretty stupid in this regard. IIRC it used to do this and the functionality was inexplicably removed for some strange and unknown reason. In the meantime, SilverKeeper is a simple, and free backup solution that has this feature.

Actually I meant to say that Backup won't mirror. That is, it won't automatically keep the backup drive in sync with the source drive. However, it should not re-copy a file that is already in your backup file unless that file has changed. Having said that I always backup to a hard drive, so perhaps it has issues when you do it to CD or DVD.
