Since upgrading to Tiger the DVD player application no longer works correctly. Video consists mostly of green noise and the timer on the controller stutters and then speeds up. Audio is unaffected. I have tried a number of DVDs and it happens with them all. When I open them in VLC the video plays normally.

I was wondering if the graphics card (ATI 8500 retail edition) is the cause of the problem. The DVD drive is an LG GSA-4163B, which appears to work in Tiger as is even though listed as unsupported in the system profiler. The system is a G4-400MHz Gigabit Ethernet model and the only original hardware that has been replaced is the graphics card and the DVD-drive.

Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem. Mostly green noise with a few little bits of picture showing through. I've also got an ATI 8500 in a 400MHz G4, but mine's an AGP graphics (sawtooth), with the original DVD drive.

Have you complained to Apple or ATI?

Barney.

I haven't been in touch with Apple or ATI yet as I was hoping it would be an easily solved problem. There is also a thread on this issue in the Mac OS X forum. In the meantime I have found that VLC still works for playing DVDs.
