well, after 2.5 years of trying Path Finder and junking it it looks like this may be the tipper for me.

Path Finder 4 feature et has been made partially available and it looks like a winner to me.

The beauty of PF (especially with this version) is that you can turn of or move around most of the items. It can be as simple or complicated as you want. At least it offers the options.

Oh crap, I haven't had French since 9th grade. This is going to be a steep learning curve. Ou est la bibliotheque?

(just kidding)

It only took me one month of being a Mac user to hate the Finder. I just started using Path Finder 3 and much prefer it. I'm looking forward to 4.

"on-the-fly icon preview of images"... yes! This is something I missed from Windows. I was very surprised that with OS X I had to go through the process of using another app to generate space wasting thumbnails just so I could browse my pictures in their dir structure. There are some pictures I download that I... errr... don't want to put into iPhoto if you know what I mean.

Do they finally have a rooted sidebar, or at least the option for it? How's the speed?

The screenshot makes it look that way, clarkgoble.
I've been giving the Finder the benefit of the doubt after upgrading to Tiger, but I'm just about ready to return to Path Finder. And it looks like v4 will be terrific.

I can't wait to try it out. I've given up on Apple fixing the Finder.

You could also open the finder window where you keep your pics, hit Command-1 (for icon view), hit Command-J (for view options), set it to "this window only", then check the "show icon preview" button, and play around with the Icon slider, non?

I am getting sick of the Finder myself. All of those little nuisances add up to a major, chronic annoyance, and Apple has made few substantive improvements to it in so many major releases. I was turned off by PF in the past, but if the newer versions are as good as some have billed them to be, I may be sold on it.

Actually I think the improvements to the Finder in Panther with the sidebar were huge. That was what made Panther so exciting for me. There were far less of those "obvious" productivity gains with Tiger. (Spotlight was exciting, but was surprisingly slow for a supposed index)

I can't wait for the new PathFinder. PF 3 is already way ahead of the Finder and works well in 10.4.
With the new, better look (IMO) and the customizable sidebar, it will be a winner.
