This may sound stupid....

You know when you want to ring someone... you can right click on the phone number and select call with "Nokia 6600".
You then have to grab the phone and talk etc...
- Is there a way so you just talk through the mac and hear through the mac
- IE... It transmits to the phone via bluetooth like a bluetooth headset??

ALSO
- I heard that when your phone is connected to the address book via bluetooth and someone calls you, you can get it to display it on the mac screen and have an option to answer or reject from your mac.
- Is this really possible??

Cheers
Darren

I don't know about the first part, but the second part (displaying the caller on screen and answer/reject) is possible. You have to have Address Book open and the phone paired, and hit the bluetooth icon button in Address Book. I'm not at my Mac now and can't remember if this is default behaviour or an option in Preferences.

^^ My address book is open... and the Phone is connected.
- But when I get a call nothing shows on the screen.

When you say address book needs to be open do you mean my active window?? If so then thats crap
- Or do you mean open it then hit the x... so its still open just not in a window (Just in the dock) <--- Thats how I have been doing it.

Infact I am sure I have tried it with it open also.

Is there an option somewhere then??

maybe looking for this (freeware)?: http://www.reelintelligence.com/BluePhoneMenu/
I don't know if that functionality is built in (to osx). I don't think it is.

the functionality is built into OS X...

And if you’ve got a Bluetooth-equipped cell phone, Address Book automatically syncs with it, alerts you when you’ve got an incoming call and displays the Caller ID information.
Works fine on mine.

Noonster, try using the Bluetooth Setup Assistant to re-setup your phone.
1. open Bluetooth Setup Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities)
2. select Mobile Phone (make sure your phone is discoverable)
3. select the phone & continue
4. on the phone, select Add to Paired, enter the pairing code
5. make sure "Use with address book" is selected

if that doesn't work, sorry - no clue.

No - you can't.

That would require your mac to conform to the Handsfree Audio Gateway Profile. (Which would require Apple to upgrade the firmware on the BT chip.)
You know it makes sense. ☼ ☼ ☼ Growl.

Thanks alot... I will try that tonight when i get home.

Question - Before I open the setup assistant... should I go to the bluetooth preferences and delete my phone from there?? and then follow your steps...

From what I can remember.... last time I set it up I didnt get any options like "Use with address book" - STRANGE!!!

REALLY hope I can get this working... as i general keep my phone on silent and would be good for the mac to tell me if someone is ringing or not.

I am guessing the talking though the mac without other apps is not possible then??

I think the steps should just refresh the setup over top of your current setup.
If it doesn't work, then try deleting and doing it again (it only takes a minute).

Once you've setup the phone, you also need to make sure the little Bluetooth logo button in the address book window is selected (highlighted in blue, and the hover-over says "<phone name> connected" I believe). I think someone mentioned this button earlier, but it's an important last part. It might be selected by default once you've setup your phone, but I don't recall that being the case.

The best app i've found for this is blue phone elite (search macupdate) it lets you send and recieve sms and phone calls as well as display incoming call information all through pairing with your mobo, check it out you'll love it. doesnt need address book open all the time either.

I also think its due for a major update soon with a better GUI

- I really cant get it working....

I tried doing it the first way (re-setup) that didnt work and then i tried removing the phone and re-doing it from scratch and still no luck.

Its very strange though as I can sync with it fine and its connected in addressbook etc...
- Just not notifying me on calls.

mmmm

Address Book does not work with all bluetooth phones. It doesn't work with mine. Try that BluePhoneMenu app. It has better support for phones and greater options than address book offers (it can use your address book).

^^ When I go there I see
"BluePhoneMenu has been discontinued. Please download BluePhoneElite for the latest features and support."

HOWEVER
- BluePhoneMenu is FREE
- BluePhoneElite is NOT free.

Will BluePhoneMenu be ok and work under Tiger??

With my Sony Ericsson T68i I could make a call and receive calls as you described: a message on the screen appeared with the number, and if the name was in your Adddress Book, that too.
I could send and receive sms on my Mac, using the phone as a kind of intermediate.
I then bought a Sony Ericsson P910i.
No go anymore in Panther regarding the SMS. Calls yes.

Upgrading to Tiger, I was hoping to find this working, as the P910i is indeed in the list of supported telephones.
But I guess the P910i is not just a phone as it still doesn't work.

So I tried this BluePhoneElite. It looks like they just put all the possibilities OS X has to offer in a new coat and then try to sell it to people who do not know about the capabilities of Panther / Tiger. Anyway, since the phone is not supported by OS X for matters like SMS, this program neither doesn't give any plus.

If your phone works with AddressBook use this. Have a look at Apple's list of supported phones and see if your phone is there. It doesn't state, however, if SMS is part of the support (i.e. my P910i from Sony Ericsson seems supported in all ways).

Bluetooth on the Mac really has some nifty features unparalleled on Windows, and certainly Salling Clicker is more than great: it's works SUPER!

From AddressBook Help:

Sending and receiving SMS messages
If your computer and cellular phone are both Bluetooth enabled, and your phone service supports it, you can use Address Book to send and receive SMS (Short Message Service) text messages.

Use the Bluetooth pane of System Preferences to pair your computer with your phone. This allows the devices to wirelessly exchange information. When a phone is paired with your computer, a Bluetooth button appears in the Address Book window. Click the button to search for paired phones that are within range (about 30 feet).
To send an SMS message, click any phone number label, such as "home," on an address card. Choose SMS Message from the pop-up menu. Be sure that the phone number you choose is a cell phone that is capable of receiving SMS messages. Note: Using special characters (for example, ç) reduces the maximum length of the message you can send. The number of characters you can add to a message appears below the text window.
When an SMS message arrives for you, a window appears on your screen. If the number for the cell phone that sent the message is in your address book, the name of the sender appears with the message. Click "Save to Note" to add the message to the person's address card.
The Address Book application must be open for you to receive SMS messages on your computer. For compatibility worldwide, calling numbers displayed by Address Book might be formatted differently than you expect. This is normal.

An alert dialog may appear on certain phones when an SMS message is received. While the dialog is displayed, the delivery of the SMS message may fail without any indication. You may need to clear the alert on your phone. See the documentation that came with your phone.

For more information about pairing Bluetooth devices or using Bluetooth, open Bluetooth File Exchange, located in Applications/Utilities, and choose Help > Bluetooth Help.

Also have a look here about compatibility with Sony Ericsson P910i and older.
