Not the first time that I've seen it -- but now that Safari 2 has made me switch from OmniWeb, the first time that I've seen in on my Powerbook: a strange font bug that causes Safari to not render certain tags correctly.

http://www.philby.net/ow-safari.gif (Warning: 160 kB GIF, 1518 Pixels large)

Leftmost window: Safari 2.0 (notice the gobbledygook in the italics)
Second Window: OmniWeb 5.1
Third window: Shiira 1.0
Fourth window: SunriseBrowser 0.741

All browsers were set to use the same font by default: Lucida Grande 11pt.

Some fonts Safari renders the text OK with: Arial, Arial Narrow, Baskerville, Courier, Courier New, Futura, Garamond 3, Georgia, Gill Sans, Helvetica Neue...

It renders rubbish with: AkzidenzGrotesk, American Typewriter, Arial Black, Arial rounded, Big Caslon, Chalkboard, Charcoal, DIN, Geeza Pro, Geneva, Geneva CY, Helvetica...

Is there any logic in this?

The strange thing is that this bug comes and goes...

Happened here also. I deleted the font caches and the problem went away.
