I know, back in the day, apple tried to keep this from working, is this still the case? Or will any external firewire or usb2 drive work now with iMovie, etc.?

In Panther, I needed to use PatchBurn to get my external drives to work with the iApps (incl. iDVD '05).

In Tiger, it just worked. No PatchBurn needed.

P.S. I'm glad that Apple finally pulled it's head out of its @ss with regards to iDVD and external drives in iLife '05.
