Safari keeps quiting, if I have several windows open, and when trying to download software, and just overall seems very touchy.
Anyone else notice this, or is it just my version, or is it just Tiger?
The version before Tiger was to me the best browser available, now I hate it!

Ever since updating to Tiger, I am unable to type a domain (i.e. "apple") into the URL field and be taken to http://www.domain.com/
I am taken to different Domain Hosting sites each time, but the URL bar will just say "http://domain/"
This is true for both computers that I have installed Tiger on.

Everybody who noticed this had some "Safari "enhancing" hacks installed.

Works fine here. Even adds the .com for you. If I delete the .com and just use apple it still takes me to the Apple homepage.

Thanks, but still hasn't fixed the problem. I got rid of Safari enhancer, and I think it was also, Safari Speed, but the browser still quits if I have more than one window open, or unexpectedly for no reason!
Is there anyway i can reinstall Safari from the Tiger disk? Or maybe even install the last version of Safari, which worked perfectly?
This is very frustrating... maybe there's a cache problem?

Well.. I had 3 kernel panic in since April 29. 2 of them were happened today. They happened when Safari was in the foreground. I had Safari Enhancer 2.5.3 and Debug menu on. I checked the Safari Enhancer website and noticed that even the current 2.5.4 release wasn't Tiger friendly.
Do you think it's related to that? I tried to empty the cache and cookies.

Could well be try turning it off for a few days and see if the problems remain.

Safari is more stable than ever for me. It used to crash occasionally in Panther, but in Tiger I have not had one crash yet so far.

Problem seems fixed now, after getting rid of the 3rd party enhancers, AND dumping Speed Downloader, which i think was the culprit, along with iGetter. No crashes now!!!
Thanks all for your suggestions!

Even with no 3rd party enhancements Safari is crashing more than it ever did under Panther... I've had more crashes in the last week than I've had all year.

I say it's likely that you didn't uninstall an incompatible hack properly. Why don't you post a crash log?

It's really screwy. Set a window where you want it to be, then resize it (if only a little), and then quit Safari. The opened window should then be where you left it. Resizing it is key.

nforcer, thanks for the tip. I had been playing with just that concept for a while and it indeed does work. However, it seems after sleeping it is again lost. Odd indeed.

Mine quits with multiple tabs open. Not on regular sites but sites that may have forum lists and posts with embedded QT or WMP content. Usually it'll quit after I've command clicked to open a few links and start jumping between tabs. No enhancers here. But I haven't tried anything yet to troubleshoot.

Try running without all the hacks above and see if the problem goes away. AcidSearch is known to have caused crashes for Safari, but I would try without all the fake InputManager hacks (and if that doesn't help also without the APE-Haxies).

Safari crashes all the time on me too, but I have Saft and Pithhelmet installed - and this probably has something to do with it.
However - I Safari is crap without Saft and Pithhelmet.

I've got absolutely no Safari hacks installed, and I'm getting crashes. However, I'm sure it's Java associated, because it only happens when I'm using a Java chat client.

I have used a few Safari hacks..
Never crashed on me. Fast, stable,
I did a clean install however.

Ditto, on two Macs. I did an archive and install on both. Using pithhelmet, Safari Enhancer, TinkerTool tweaks and an app that gives a warning if I try to close a page with multiple tabs open.

Sorry for the stupid question but what's the best was to remove these hacks? Should I create a "Hacks" folder and put everything in it and then reinstall the origional programs and see what makes it crash?

You could rename the folder Input Managers in your Library folder containing them to Input Managers (Disabled) and reboot. Then you use Safari and see if the problem is gone. APE has a control panel that can be used to disable it (but more likely it's the fault of a fake-Input Manager hack).
If you reinstall the programs that installed the hacks, you will reinstall the hack and possible get the problem back. It might be that a newer version is available that fixes the crash.

Bingo... upgrading the programs you pointed out to me solved the problem. Thanks for you help. I've been trying to solve this problem since upgrading to Tiger and you are the first of offer specific advice. Plus, I've learned a lot in the process.
Thanks again,
Steve

Well, I have a new one: my Safari, which has no hacks/input managers suddenly started crashing on me. Safari has been as smooth as those without problems reported here, but all of a sudden, I cannot keep the browser running for more than a minute. Browse to a web page and BAM. Crash! WTF? The weird thing is that I don't even get a crash report dialog. Safari just quits and that's all. No notification.
Console.app reports the following:
2005-06-02 23:01:27.786 Safari[342] An uncaught exception was raised
2005-06-02 23:01:27.786 Safari[342] *** -[NSConcreteFileHandle readDataOfLength:]: Input/output error
2005-06-02 23:01:27.787 Safari[342] *** Uncaught exception: <NSFileHandleOperationException> *** -[NSConcreteFileHandle readDataOfLength:]: Input/output error
Any ideas? I have removed all my plug-ins (Flash, Shockwave, Java, PDF, and QuickTime) but still no luck.
[edit] The safari crash log shows no crash-related data. In fact, the last time Safari crashed on my machine was back in March 2004!!!

[edit] Nevermind what's below...it seems to have fixed itself after ten minutes of thinking...
Buh Jebus! Now because of Dashboard's use of WebKit, it appears none of my widgets work...they just sit there upon invoking the Dashboard, thinking. Great.

Well, after a summer of using Firefox instead of Safari, I was determined to get back to Safari. I tried turning off all extras (Java, JavaScript, Cookies, Plugins, etc), and Safari let me browse to my hearts content without quitting.
Browsing without these options was fine until I went to my banking site that required cookies. I turned them on, and Safari quit unexpectedly without any notice or crash log. Ah, hah! Not realizing that cookies were stored in another location other than ~/Library/Safari/ but rather in ~/Library/Cookies/ and that Safari has a bug as mentioned in this hint on Mac OS X Hints, I had not found the solution until just a moment ago: Manually delete the contents of ~/Library/Cookies/.
That article I mentioned describes a bug in resetting Safari with respect to Cookies such that resetting Safari DOES NOT delete your cookies until you view the list in the Preferences. Hence why resetting safari did no good the first time around. In order to completely reset Safari, you must reset it, and then manually delete the contents of ~/Library/Cookies/ in case a corrupted set of cookies is causing your copy of Safari to crash.
Safari really is the best performing browser on my 600 MHz G3 iBook. Firefox and Camino were very slow when browsing many tabs. Plus, I like the spit and polish of Safari better. I'm glad to be using it again.

Has anyone had trouble in Tiger with Pith Helmet? I paid for that, but for a while it was just so unstable I couldn't use it. I really loved not having ads all the time though. Maybe I'll just give it a try.

Have the latest build? I found the latest versions of pith on Tiger to be much more stable than pith on Panther.

the one i just downloaded is 2.6.1. Is that what you're running? I'm a little afraid to install it, but I suppose it will be okay. its fully reversable, right?
