I've been a Mini + Tiger owner for a little more than a week. I managed to convert and import 150,000 PC Outlook Express messages into Mail 2.0. I also upgraded to 1GB of system memory and have the 1.42GHz processor.
Mail just seems to be a dog and I wonder if I'm using it in a way that slows it down. I would appreciate comments and suggestions.
Coming from the Windows world I set up Outlook Express to use many folders and to NEVER use the "message preview pane" so one could prevent security issues, spyware, viruses and worms. So each email was viewed and then opened.
Mail opens with an equal number of folders and messages, no message preview pane, and then takes its sweet time to show me all the messages in a particular folder. If I switch folders I wait again and again as I switch and read. With Outlook Express on the PC all but one folders show contents and messages immediately. The one that doesn't has 50K messages and it takes about 20 seconds to open it. Is Mail that much slower or am I doing something unusual?
In Outlook Express there is a Next & Previous button that lets me move downwards/upwards through the mail in a folder. So far in my research I cannot find a command or hot key that allows the same capability. Please advise how to do this with Mail since X'ing out and opening the next one is slow.
When responding to an email I usually return a portion of the previous message. Is there a way to get the spell checker to check only the new portion of the email?
From a Mail security perspective what additional applications should I install on my Mini. I assume antivirus but don't know who's the best on the Apple side? Spyware on the PC is a huge problem but I understand not so here. What do I need to keep my Mini free of problems?
Thanks for the assistance.

I don't understand why you don't use the split pane with the message content. You can use the up/down arrow keys to navigate to the next/previous mail.
Instead of spell checking the whole mail at the end you can turn on "Check spelling as you type" and it will underline red any misspelled words. I don't see it as a problem that this might underline misspelled words you quoted. Just ignore these spelling mistakes.
You don't have to install any software to make Mail secure. It is secure.

He doesn't because, on windows Outlook Express, simply *showing* an e-mail already loads and auto-executes any and all viruses and worms that may be attached.
(That just completely blows my mind, btw, and what I really don't understand is why Microsoft isn't sued for billions of dollars in damages by millions of users - every day - for this kind of unfathomable bullsh¡t.)
ROBO58, welcome to Macintosh, where you can actually just look at your e-mails.

Set up a couple of gmail accounts and put your emails there. Can search via spotlight or rss that way.
