Ok, Apple's site says 4.7.1 but when you download it, it is in fact 4.8.

New features:

1. iTunes now organises Video - open a quicktime movie, will play in the artwork pane, or you can press the fullscreen button (bottom of the window next to add playlist etc).

2. The script menu has the updated icon.

All I've found so far

And it appears mpgs will not play either, although they will add to your library.

So maybe .mov's only for now? Maybe mp4s too (I didn't test one of those)?

All glory to the hypnotoad.

Why can't they spend resources on something useful, such as gapless playback and AAC VBR encoding? Now they're just bloating it

Supposedly the big feature is the ability to sync contacts and calendars through iTunes.

The .rsrc file doesn't contain any new iPods though

Specially if "See new features in the Music Store For more information, visit www.apple.com/itunes." means downloadable video.

Personally, I don't care to use iTunes as a movie player. It might be handy to add music videos...but honestly!

So let me get this straight: If you go through the trouble to add a movie to your iTunes library, you can go fullscreen. But if you just play it in QuickTime Player they charge you $29 for the feature? How does that make sense?

This points towards Big Things.

I always thought Apple should integrate a movie manager with iPhoto, or make a standalone app. The only reason I can see for integrating movies with iTunes is if they are planning a movie store through iTunes. Interesting.

How to crash iTunes 4.8:

• Start playing a video in fullscreen
• Invoke Exposé
• select a window other than the one displaying the video.

Either iTunes will crash, or it will beachball on you. Sometimes it exits from fullscreen fine.

Larger the file, the more likely it will crash it seems.

My guess is that this will be for music videos, not feature films.

There is no topic.

In all seriousness, it's a valid question in the "iTunes 4.8" discussion: that is, why iTunes is becoming more of media player than QuickTime -- why a tune-playing program has more movie features than a media-player.

One less app to worry about when you want to update your iPod.

iTunes opens automatically from many when they hook up their iPod anyway.

So now, when ever your iPod is hooked up, and when you open iTunes it updates for you.

And ten bucks says that video iPods are out by the end of the year.
I do believe I read recently apple has the rights to use some new chips that a good at video processing.

It don't have more features. it just happens one that is in both is free in just one of the 2.

Quicktime Player has many more features to deal with video/audio.

iTunes is getting more and more bloated, mainly because it's the only app Apple makes for Windows. As such, it has to do all the things on windows that could be done previously with several Apple made apps on the Mac. It now syncs photos, calendars, address cards, plays movies, acts as a music store... oh and apparently you can use it as a jukebox - who knew?!

I was assuming that was the only reason they moved contact sync into iTunes? Otherwise what's the point? Hmm...

iTunes 4.8 player simply plays the movie, it has no RW/FF/Pause ability like QTPro. It may do full screen, but nothing like QTPro, which incidentally is more than just FullScreen ability, for pity's sake, people.

This isn't limited to invoking Expose. I just started playing a video I downloaded ... from the ITMS no less .... in full screen mode and when I exited back to the normal window the video stopped playing and I got an endless beachball. Eventually had to force quit iTunes. It seemed to work in the Now Playing and separate window just fine. Definitely a bit of a mixed first impression.

The video support is strange - I'd say it's only half-way thought out. For example: if you play a movie, and have it set to import things to your library, it copies the movie to your MUSIC folder. And since there are no ID3 tags, it goes in the unknown artist/unknown album folder. It seems anyone who gave it a second thought would put it in the MOVIES folder (if it weren't there already), and explicitly create an option to keep movies organized - they're much larger files to be copying as a side-effect of playing them in a particular program.

Also, the preferences has the option of playing movies in main window (just the artwork window, actually), a separate window, or full-screen, but in the main application, there's only a button for full-screen, no way to choose a separate window instead.

If the only purpose of this is to include music videos with songs, or sell them separately, this is all fine, they can go in the music folder, and playing in the artwork box is ok. But if this presages selling movies, they obviously have a lot to improve, and I'm curious why release such a partial implementation.

They were in 4.7. I wish iTunes would play Ogg, since Tiger broke the QuickTime codec.

People are working on proper CoreAudio plug-ins for mpc, which could pave the way for Vorbis. link
