So I open any movie, do Apple-J for movie properties and it quits every time.
I export a file to .dv format, I choose 16:9 and every time I get squashed 4:3.
I just *paid* for this rubbish!

Movie properties worked OK for me, have not tried the export issue though.

Well after a lot of Googling I fixed the movie properties issue (you have to change to another country in International prefs pane, log out, change back and log out again - wtf?!).
DV export is hopeless though. It doesn't matter what I do, I get 4:3. After having paid for Tiger, it's bad enough you have to pay for QT Pro (especially as Tiger comes with Xcode which most users don't need) but when it doesn't even work properly then I find that unacceptable. Tiger is great, QT7 is not by a long chalk.

I'm having the same problem. I'll have to give that solution a shot. Thanks!
Edit: It works, thanks!

Fixed resolution is part of the DV specification. The format "DV" only allows NTSC (720x480,29.97fps) or PAL (720x576,25fps). There is no other option to make a DV file. QT is just following the spec.

Even if 4:3 and 16:9 have the same resolution (720x486) they have a different pixel aspect ratio (0,9 vs 1.2) you should be able to tag this info so the movie is displayed properly.

Giving the developer tools away on every CD of OS X sold is the best idea Apple has had in a long time. Where do you think all the great free/shareware come from?

Indeed.
I'd much rather have Xcode than QT Pro coming free with the OS...

Fair enough but I'd rather have to pay £20 for Xcode than for QT Pro. Ah well.

The QT Pro fee has to do with the fact that it uses technology licensed from other companies. They have to pass through the fees.
It's a legal issue.
Most of the video / audio things work this way. The player is free, but to create content you have to buy the license.
It still sucks, but that's the reason.

My gripe with QT7 is that it killed avi playback. I get 2 or 3 frames then it sits there, the audio keeps going till the end then the video jumps to the last frame. It worked in QT6. not great, but it worked.

Is it DivX/XviD video that is played back by the 3ivx codec? There's been many reports that 3ivx isn't working properly under QT7.

Looks like it's 3ivx
I pulled it and tried this one:
DivX Pro™
video is slow and stuttery but it goes. Actually plays a little better the second time through.
I will admit the picture is much better than in QT6- less artifacts. even with the same plug-in

On higher performance machines, QT7 Player does work fine. But on the lower machines, it's performance is vastly inferior to 6.5.2 on Panther. Even the carbon player (which still works in Tiger) doesn't perform as well as it used to, but it's much better than the 7 player.
Gavin, I get that same issue, no matter what decoder I'm using on my iBook 500. And QTPro has nothing to do with fees, that's the MPEG-2 component. Especially full screen playback and saving online trailers: neither of these have any fees at all.
