I have over 12000 songs on my G5 in my office which, in the past, I have happily shared through my Switched hub to the other Macs in the house, as-well as to my laptop using AP Extreme. So, along comes Tiger and it now longer works. The firewalls are all open on 3689 and everything is set up as it was, yet now I can't stream the audio. I can see the library but when you click it there's about 3 minutes of an indeterminate progress bar which results in an error (-3259). On the odd occasion I'll get 1 song to stream but when it moves on to the next one in the playlist I get "connecting" for ages until it finally drops out again. This happens on all Macs which try to connect to the G5 - Wired or Wireless. File sharing services etc. all work perfectly - For some reason iTunes just won't share! Obviously it's the G5 that is causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this at all? I'm having some friends over in a couple of weeks and the prospect of no music being available downstairs doesn't bear thinking about!!! I have NetBarrier on my G5 upsatirs but that never caused an issue before and even when it is out of the equation sharing still fails.

Thanks in advance

Is every version of iTunes the same? Some previous versions couldn't share with each other but I don't know if thats the case with iTunes 4.8, or if you even updated to 4.8 for that matter. Can you share between the other computers? Have you tried making a new user on the G5 and seeing if that user can share.

Good luck.

All of the Macs are running 4.8 right now, but it also had this problem using the version of iTunes installed with Tiger. File sharing, everything all works fine. I run files between the machines all day. Every single network operation works a treat, except this one! It's very weird. I have trashed iTunes' preferences, trashed the iTunes Helper Preferences (I have no idea what that does) but nothing seems to help. With all the security software (NetBarrier) and the Firewall off it still doesn't work.

As SSharon suggested, try putting some songs on another mac in the network and try streaming from that machine. Does that work? Are any other macs still running 10.3? If yes, are you able to stream from a 10.3 machine?

iTunes on my PowerBook has a few songs in it. The G5 can see that library and plays the songs perfectly. The problem appears to be outgoing iTunes traffic on the G5. If you quit iTUnes ont he G5 then the first track plays across the network fine - Selecting another track or waiting for the next track int he playlist to play is what causes the problem. I have re-installed iTunes and deleted preferences. I think that the iTunes Helper application handles the streaming, since if you quit it using the Process viewer then nothing will stream, even the first time.

This is doing my head in. I've been using Macs for over 12 years and have never struggled this hard with a problem.

OK - So I got it licked. I'm still a bit confused but more investigation will likely turn something up. Basically, it is NetBarrier. I had to physically un install NetBarrier before I could get sharing to work properly. Prior to Tiger I have used NetBarrier for ages and it never affected the sharing. In NetBarrier even setting the access level to "No Restrictions" causes this problem. It is possible that it's anti vandal features have been changed and that they are causing the snafu. Whatever it is, it's damn annoying as I don't like running the Mac without NB, given the amount of Port Scans I get. Thanks to allk who tried to help - If I get a reply from Intego Tech Support on why it may happen I will post it here in case someone else has the same bother.

The built-in firewall is insufficient for your needs?

I don't think I could claim that it was insufficient - I'm just paranoid, if truth be known. The built in FIrewall is fine, but NB has some other features which I like. The Anti Vandal stuff is handy and gives me a bit more reassurance. Then there's the fact that having paid for the app I would rather use it than not....... It has always happily co-existed with iTunes sharing in the past, so what is causing it to throw it's toys out of it's pram now is a mystery to me.

Burning the midnight oil there Big Mac......

Did you contact the NetBarrier developers with your problem? They might be familiar with it and maybe have a solution/update/patch/whatever for you. Hey, as you pointed out, you paid for it, and for support too I'd assume. Good luck!

Yes - I've put a mail into Intego so that they can look into it. I have a feeling that the issue may be somewhere in the Anti Vandal section, although as I said, It always used to work perfectly. Actually, the thing I miss most is Net Barrier's smallest feature - A very sexy and useful data throughput monitor!

Thanks to all who have helped.
