I can't fix this problem, so I'm hoping someone here can help.

I'm running Tiger on a 1.33Ghz PB 12". I archived and installed Tiger, so there shouldn't be any old gremlins. I'm not running any third party utilities.

The problem I'm having is that Mail 2.0 all of a sudden stopped downloading messages from two of my POP accounts. It was working just fine for a week, and then, without me fiddling with anything, said the connection to the server on Port 0 timed out. I assumed it was a server problem and would go away, but it didn't. I know it's a problem with Mail because the email downloads just fine from both Entourage and Thunderbird. And of course, being able to download from those two, it's not my server, username, or password settings.

Here's what I've tried/checked to fix the problem:

-- trashed the mail.com plist
-- deleted one of the problem accounts in mail and set it up again
-- verified under accounts:advanced that the Port is set to 110
-- Clicked the use SSL tab under accounts:advanced--Mail then tells me the connection on Port 995 timed out
-- Verified with Network Utility I can connect to the server: it pings no problem.
-- Used Connection Doctor--it says it can't fix the problem and to check my settings and try again

Frankly I can't think of anything else. Setting up a POP account is not hard: server, username and password, that's all you need. I've got those, so why won't it connect? And what the heck is Port 0 when it's set to connect on Port 110?

Bizarrely, after three days of not connecting, Mail briefly, gloriously connected this morning. I hadn't changed a thing--it just all of a sudden connected. Then when I tried to send a test email from one of the problem accounts to itself, the problem came right back: the connection to the server on Port 0 timed out.

Secondly, my gmail account, also a POP server, has no problem connecting. I'd assume it was the server (both these accounts are from the same ISP) but not when Entourage and Thunderbird can download the messages just fine.

Lastly, my .Mac account is also peachy. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Dunny

I have a new G4 PB running Tiger, and the same problem has started up a couple of days ago. The messages are there on Webmail, but I can't get them to download. My other POP accounts, some of them from the same hosted domain, download fine. If anyone can shed some light on the problem, I would be deeply grateful.

Bump... same problem.

"The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "localhost" on port 0 timed out."

Right now I'm using an ssh tunnel for my mail access but regardless...port 0?

I never configured that...

Just wondered if anyone ever determined the cause (or a solution) to this problem. I've run thru most of the same list of attempted fixes, without success. It couldn't be too common, since there is very little discussion other than the thread here...

There is another thread on this somewhere, but I'll tell you what I did.

Just put Tiger on, and had the same problem. In the library there is a 'bundles' folder. Trash that, and off you go. It will start downloading all the mail you had there before Tiger.

Actually, I found it to be a very common problem, especially for those that did the Tiger upgrade. Google 'tiger mail bundles'

how strange that the problem should crop up at the same time for so many of us - I recently have experienced the same problem. I had no idea what was happening - I thought nobody loved me anymore! But then I noticed that I could see lots of mail if I used a webmail interface through safari rather than mail2.0 so I guessed something was amiss...

will try trashing the bundles folder and see.

cheers

well I still can't get my mail. anyone have a different approach? I checked on the apple support forums and other people are having the same problems - bizarrely, most people only ran into this recently. What could it be?

The support forums suggested changing port numbers etc - I tried all of this and still no luck. Mail cannot connect to my POP server.

Does anyone have any fix for this problem? I ran into it after updating to 10.4.6 and haven't been able to resolve it.
