I've tried searching for this, but obviously not very well.

I've got a few programs that tell me when new mail arrive or my RSS feeds get updated (NewsYouCanUse, Mail and GMail Status), and they all play different sounds when there's something to see. However, all of the Apple supplied sounds are pretty similar. Is there any way to put new sounds in, or do I have to use some sort of haxie like Xounds?

You can customize the sound of Mail.app very easily (in the prefs). As for the other apps, I don't know.

~/Library/Sounds
if you put sound files into there, applications will be able to use them.
