yeah...it's lame.
Also, there's another annoying bug.
Open iCal
Put system to sleep
Wait one or more days
Wake system
Both the current day and the previous day are highlighted in blue (current day indicator).

i've set my ical as a startup item, so theoretically...it always shows the correct date.
what annoys me is when ical is open and the default is showing...
(makes me nervous when it REALLY is the 17th!)

I don't know if it works in Tiger but there used to be a freeware app that would automatically update the iCal date at a certain time, in case you didn't use iCal on a daily basis.

what would be great would be an icon WITHOUT the 17th on it; at least you'd know when it's showing the date (versus just it's "generic" icon...)
that's of course a (sad) alternative to it working correctly...

but it still shows in the dock. if its going to be showing, then it should show the correct date. If its not going to do that, then it should just be a generic calendar image, and be left at that.
Since its a program written by apple, and the OS is apple's, I dont see why they can't code it to just have the forrect date, running or not.
its an annoyance, and I use it often enough to where i need it in the dock. But its geting to the point where I'd rather be forced to navigate through the applications folder to get to it just so i dont see the 17th showing everyday.

I have iCal set to open at start up (log-in) and just leave it hidden the background all the time for just this reason. It is SILLY for it to have the wrong date just because it's not running, the scheduler *should* update it at the start of each day, seems basic enough.

This has bothered me for a while, too. But w/ 10.4.2, it appears the icon does not update at _all_! It's July 14th and my dock icon reads "17"!? I had a "launch-and-quit" script setup w/ a cron tab at 12:01am--worked fine w/ Jaguar & Panther, but broke in Tiger. Now pointless in 10.4.2
Apple, why doesn't it do this auto-magically? And why doesn't it work at all now??

Yes, it does.
The icon not changing is a minor annoyance to me. What really gets me is that iCal, Mail, and Address Book are all seperate programs. Is there some reason why Apple doesn't combine these three into an Entourage/Outlook-type app? There is decent integration between the apps, but I don't think I should have to open three programs just to check email, schedule appointments, and manage contacts.

NO! That is how bloatware happens. Apple's already shifting a part of it's Application Infrastructure to bloatware (iTunes is becoming a do it all app), no need to extend it further.

Because this is the Mac Way, and also the Unix Way: small tools which do one thing, do it well, and combine with other apps to do things greater than any of them could do alone. This is how they keep things from becoming bloated.

Why? This is the entire point of a multitasking environment. There is no reason not to open three apps as opposed to one. All that combining them would do is create bloat.
Actually, that's not entirely true. Combining them would also likely compromise the interface of at least one app. As long as they are separate, they can truly have the best UI for their respective jobs, without having to take the other applications into account. As soon as this changes, well... it changes.

You are correct. I am wrong--last night, my finder locked-up w/o me noticing thus the icon didn't refresh. A quick logout/in this morning fixed that.
Still, I would like the icon to remain--its a nuance, but aren't they the details that make the "Mac" so cool?

I don't see how. It only seems to be possible to have dynamic icons for programs that are open. Otherwise it would have to actually write into the iCal bundle, which would be Evil.

Which is why Apple should just remove the "17" from that iCal icon and make everyone happy.
They made the icon work much better previously but subsequent updates of the OS has made this little "flaw" into a experience.

I'm sure an applescript or automator action could be set up with all the date icons that uses cron to change the icon in the .app every 24 hours.
Not that there should have to be one.

In Tiger, set iCal to open when you log in from sleep and the date will change.

...and yet the icon still reverts to default sometimes..!
(10.4.2)
i changed my default icon yesterday to a custom ical icon; now, at least, i will easily see when it's not showing the date.
nuisance, tho..

Hmmm... it's July 17th, and the icon is right today, without iCal running!

If you look at the icon more closely, you can see "Jul" in the upper left corner. It's only REALLY right once a year
