I've noticed that Safari 2.0 doesn't seem to display favicons for certain sites that it used to display in version 1.3. Examples are http://www.cnn.com, http://www.macworld.com/news, http://news.com.com, http://www.slashdot.org, etc. I discovered this because I cleared my icon cache in order for Safari to pick up some updated favicons at a few websites. This is an unfortunately step because it apparently caches whatever it finds the first time you visit a site and never looks again unless there is no cache entry ... but oh well. So I do this and go to visit all my regular sites to reload the favicons and most work fine ... but several no longer show as I mentioned before. Firefox seems to display them just fine however.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Any idea why this is happening?

If you download the favicon of slashdot and try to open with Preview, Preview says that it's "broken or in an unknown format". So it seems to be an issue with whatever library opens Windows icon files, not Safari itself.

Safari 2.0 sees the Slashdot icon fine, but it refuses to see the icon for one of my own sites (shameless plug: www.esteemmag.ca). Camino sees the icon fine, however.

It's a known bug which will be fixed eventually.

Strange. Mine is the exact opposite. I can't see the favicon on Slashdot anymore but I see the one on your site just fine. It's a green leaf or something like that right?

Apparently so ....

The April 28 entry discusses this problem. Looks like it affects Camino too. Mike Pinkerton had expected it to be corrected in 10.4.1 but unfortunately that didn't happen.

Or simply deactivate the flavicons all together using Safari Speed.

Yep. Bizarre! I'm glad to know it's being fixed soon.

OAW
Here the same: cannot see slashdot but do see the "shameless plug".
