I am new to Mac OS and I am not sure if I am doing everything right. I tried to install several programs (Firefox, Fugu, Acrobat Reader). I did what TETENAL says here:
http://forums.macnn.com/82/applications/247109/how-do-i-install-dmg-file/
double click the .dmg file, then drag the contents of the image into the Applications folder (Firefox and Fugu) or run the installer (Acrobat Reader). The problem is that every time when I start Firefox or Fugu, the white disk (I assume that this is the virtual disk that TETENAL mentions) appears on the desktop and when I close the application it doesn't disappear. No disk appears on the desktop when I start Acrobat reader.

I assume that after installing the program, the disk should no longer appear on the desktop or at least should disappear after I close the program. If so, what I am doing wrong?

Edit: the white disk appears only when I drag the contents of the installation image(?) to the dock during the installation and start the program from the dock. If I start the program from the Applications folder, it doesn't appear. If I create shortcut from the Applications folder to the dock and start the program from the dock, it doesn't appear. Go figure...

I have a couple of networking questions posted here:
http://forums.macnn.com/92/networking/257051/misc-networking-questions/

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, if you drag the application that is in the disk image (virtual white) disk into the Dock, then clicking the icon in the Dock will mount the disk image and launch the application in the disk image. If you put the application from the Applications folder in the Dock, then clicking the icon in the Dock will run the application from the Applications folder.

What you want to do is after dragging the application from the disk image into the Applications folder you unmount the white disk (move trash or select and File->Eject in the Finder menu) and trash the .dmg file. You don't need the .dmg any more. After that drag the application from the Applications folder into the Dock if you like a shortcut there.

Thanks TETENAL
