Is there such a program [or a preventative method] for OS X that will save your data if the program crashes?

The closest methods is [1] when the program has an "auto save" feature or [2] if you manually save it periodically.

From a technically standpoint; is it possible for the data to be backed up right when the program crashes, or maybe is there a hidden cache somewhere on the computer that stores the data?

curious
