I had to format my iBook yesterday, and prior to doing so I moved my iTunes folder to another computer. After formatting, I created the same username as I had before in osx, and put my iTunes folder (entire folder) in the Music folder.

Now, i keep getting the message "The song ___ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" on every song.

I checked the iTunes Music Library.xml and the path for all the files is correct.

Any ideas on how to fix this without having to just uninstall and reinstall iTunes and reimport all my music from scratch? The only reason I dont want to do this is b/c I don't want to lose the ratings I've done on all my music.

Thanks in advance.

I gave up on fixing the above error.

now I'm reimporting all my music ( i moved the music to a folder on my desktop, cleared out all the itunes prefs, and the files in the itunes folder in music....

but now when I import all my music, its doing everythign 2x. But, if I import 1 folder at a time (one cd) it imports just fine

what's going on with this thing?

Under preferences, you have an option not to copy music into the iTunes folder. This must have been turned off and so it's duplicating everything.
Do you have .Mac? If so, you can use Backup.app and make a copy of your iTunes library, then if you had to reimport again, you could just reinstall the backed up library, ratings and all.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I figured out what was wrong, I had a copy of my iTunes Library in my backup folder with all my music... so technically I did have duplicate copies of everythign in the folder I was importing from.

Chalk up another one to my own stupidity.

Don't have .Mac b/c I would only be using it for iTunes backup, and I may as well backup all my stuff to my own server at home for free where I can backup everything in minutes as opposed to hours. I just can't justify the cost yet.
