If you're using tabs, you can type a URL and hit cmd-space in order to open the URL in a new tab.
(Found it by mistake - I always used cmd-return)
Not that much big of a deal. I just wanted to tell somebody... =B

Isn't that ctrl-space default?
(How else would you zoom in Adobe apps...? =) )

It's not possible for it to be command-space, that key command is trapped by Mac OS to switch keyboard layouts.

He meant command-return. Command-return while in the URL field opens the URL in a new tab. Command-return while in the Google search field opens the search in a new tab.
I have another Safari hint:
If you select some text you can do "Search with Google" to do a Google search for the selection. However the search is in the same tab which is often annoying if you want to search for something but also want to continue readin the original content. However you can also select some text and drag the text into Safari's icon in the Dock. It will then do a Google search in a new window. Of course you can also drag text from all other applications into the Safari Dock-icon to initiate a Google search.

In Panther, yes.
In Tiger, it triggers Spotlight.
You haven't upgraded yet, obviously.

You can also use the cmd key to get the google search to open in a new tab.

Over 100,000 Iraqis -dead. Over 200,000 Afganis - dead. and counting...
All dead based on lies fed to an uninformed public, to manipulate them into not seeing the true agenda. All dead in the name of protecting US interests. Not one single thing these hypocrites tells us is based on truth. Not one thing.

Actually, I really meant cmd-space. Provided it's not in use by Spotlight or keyboard layouts (I always keep mine available for Adobe-zooming), the combo opens a new tab (both from the URL and search field).
At least on my mac..
