I have no used VPC since a long time ago, but I guess that lot of space is really the PC hard disk image where the Windows OS and apps files are placed, so the issue is that you could have that PC disk image on the external hard disk, though. Does this make sense?

angelmb is right. the main size that virtual pc uses is its images. they are usually stored in your documents folder. you can move these around. leave the virtual pc application in the application, but then move the images to your other hard disk.

as for idvd, i am not sure.

Sorry what do you mean by images? In my apps folder it just says Windows XP Home. No folder to open up and adjust.

Images as in disk images. That "Windows XP Home" file is a disk image that contains Windows XP and whatever data you've put on it. You can safely move that to a different drive.
