I don't really like iPhoto's RAW conversions so I'm looking for a free (or relatively cheap) camera RAW (NEF and ORF preferred )to JPEG/TIFF converter that does relatively well. any suggestions?

Most digital cameras that support RAW come with software that will convert it. Try checking the CDs that came with your camera.

If your looking for NEF conversion then Nikon's own software does an excellent job. I'm not sure what its called either nikon capture or picture project.

As for all around raw conversion I'd say photoshop.

it's called capture, but it costs $100 US extra. i was hoping for some freeware/shareware that could do a relatively good job for less
