quicktime crashes when trying to play .3gp file

A friend of mine sent me i movie-clip filmed with his cellphone. The format i 3gp. When I try to open it in quicktime the app launches and the shuts down immediately. If I try to preview it in finder, finder crashes and relaunches! The only app that can play it is VLC but there's no sound.

Anyone had any similar problems?
