I'm looking for a way to run System 7 on my PowerBook so I can use some really old software.

I tried Basilisk and it actually works, but there's no sound.

Anyone know of any other software? There is, of course, MOL, but I don't wanna install Linux on my PowerBook at the moment.

You're in luck. A Mac On Linux port to Mac OS X is in progress. They have it posted in their mailing list archives. Alternatively try a Google search for Mac On Mac.

Actually, someone's working on a port of Mac-On-Linux right now. It's called, appropriately enough, Mac-On-Mac.

Unfortunately, it's extremely rough around the edges at this point. In particular, it doesn't support sound, and so I get the feeling it's not what you're looking for. All these things are being worked on, however. The other thing to be aware of is that I'm not sure how far back it goes in terms of support; in particular, I don't know if it can go back as far as System 7.

Mac-on-Mac (or Mac-on-Linux) is probably not the solution you want, since the fact that it doesn't actually emulate the processor means you'll probably not be able to run anything that has a problem with modern hardware. I wouldn't place any bets on old versions of the OS working, either...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I'll give Mac-on-Mac a whirl. Thanks guys!

With vMac or Mini vMac you still need to locate ROMS and system software. Not always an easy thing to do.

I think you can get up to System 7.5.3 for free from Apple. The OS was freeware (though not open-source) all the way up through System 7.0, and Apple encouraged resellers to give copies away to anyone who brought in enough floppies. That changed with System 7.1, but then in the OS8 days (OS0.6, I think it was), Apple went back and released up to System 7.5.3 for free. That was the last time Apple ever released a complete OS -as opposed to just upgrades- for free, however.

You can download System 7.5.3 from here.

He was talking about the ROM, not the OS.

It's not a problem for me since my parents still have an old Mac Plus around. I can see how it could be a problem if you don't have one.

I wish Apple would make the old ROMs freely available like they did with the old OSs. Oh well.

Mac-on-Mac doesn't yet support Tiger (neither as host, nor as guest), also.

BTW, if this program will really be developed, it will also become an excellent way of running PPC Linux on OS X, without the tremendous speed issues that affect x86 Linux run through Virtual PC or QEMU (the latter being almost completely unusable, at least on a G4).
