Has anyone that upgraded to Tiger and using Mail 2.0 imported their mail and settings from Entourage with success? I have over 10,000 emails in Entourage, so I loathe moving them if its a problem. On the other hand I have heard good reports of Mail 2.0 under Tiger, so would like to give that a try.

I moved from Entourage to Tiger Mail and had no problems at all. I had about 15K messages spanning 10 years and it appears that they all made the transfer. I did back up my entourage DB just in case but so far so good. And I can't convey how easy it is to find something with the Mail find feature. It's so much better than the entourage one.

Overall, yes. They're imported into a folder called 'imported', which is separate from the 'On my Mac' folder. As I didn't need two folders separated in that heirarchy, I just moved my folders from imported to On My Mac and deleted the empty imported folder. But everything in imported matched my entourage hierarchy exactly. I have to say,. I was very pleased with the import tool.

-Q-, did you have Entourage installed on Tiger or did you just have the Microsoft User Data folder in your documents folder and imported from that? I was hoping I could just use the MUD folder as the target for the import into Mail 2.0 and thus one less Microsoft product on my Tiger.

Unfortunatley, you have to have Entourage installed for the import to work. I tried it both ways, with a straight upgrade on my laptop and a clean install on my desktop and the desktop required me to have entourage installed for Mail to import the old emails.

I have been trying to import my mail boxes from Entourage to Mail- but for no obvious reason, the import stalls and beach balls. It will import a few, then stall. I force quit Mail and then restart process over again. Then several more import, then beach balls. I looked for a common reason why the import mail beach balls (attachment, html vs text) and could not find any one reason. On any one import, various types of email from Entourage imported prior to the application beach balling. Any ideas?

Did you try rebuilding your Entourage DB? There may be something corrupt in there that Mail is choking on during the import. To rebuild it, hold down the option key as you open Entourage.

one thing i read in the microsoft entourage groups board is that if you export from entourage first then import, you won't have some of the problems. i don't have entourage installed any longer, but i believe there is something called 'entourage archive'?

also, if you are importing from a mailbox that was used for a different user name, you will most definitely have to rebuild.

when i tried to import into mail, i got an error 61. then i installed entourage to see if i could open my mail there. it said my db was corrupt. i rebuilt my db. THEN i went back and imported. my guess is it was because my user name from my old OS was different and it choked on it. it took forever to import, but it worked.

you also might try compacting your database in entourage before importing. seems to do whatever micro$oft hack to shrink it down in size. maybe that will help.

OK, after making the jump to tiger and spending 3 hours importing my 20,000 emails from Entourage to Mail 2.0 i find i can not do mail merges from Word or Excel, so I guess I am stuck with Entourage for now.

Also one thing i am not sure about is Spotlight - can it index and search emails in Entourage?

anyone in the same boat as me?

If you wanted to use Mail as your primary email client, it makes me think you'll be using Address Book to store your contacts. You could use something like Sync Entourage-Address Book to keep your addresses updated in Entourage so you could do mail merges in Word and Excel, but continue uses Mail as your primary email client.

And no, Spotlight cannot yet index the Entourage email database due to its design. MS made it one big file and Spotlight doesn't yet know how to sift through all of that and pull out the individual email 'pieces'. When Tiger was introduced, I seem to recall the head of the MacBU saying they were working with Apple on making this possible, but I've not heard any news since then.
