Am running 10.4.1 and Quicktime 7.01. Have divx, 3ivx, AC3 and xvid codecs.

Whenever I try to play the WWDC keynote (or in fact any video from the Apple Events section of the Quicktime website) I get no sound. I can play other files (trailers etc.) with no problems.

Anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?

Uninstall the codecs that don't specificially state support for Tiger or Quicktime 7. The keynote is using AAC audio, and likely one of the many know problems with the codecs you listed is preventing the audio from working.

Hopefully soon a proper fully supported Divx codec for Quicktime 7 will come out. Until then, look to MPlayer for your non Quicktime file playback needs.

I have done this without success. I have also noticed that when I start virtual PC I get a message saying:

"Virtual PC is unable to play sounds. VPC is unable to start the mac audio system. A newer version of the Mac OS might fix this problem".

The only places I have noticed I am not getting sound are in Virtual PC and when trying to play the quicktime streaming stuff on the Apple events site. Looks like I have some kind of wider problem. Anyone for any ideas?

Thanks. I ended up doing a clean install which fixed the problem. Took a lot of time. I am sure this would have fixed the problem. At least if it appears again I know what's causing it.

I was experiencing the same problem, and the adjustment of the MIDI audio output sample rate setting recommended by the above kbase article fixed it. Thanks a lot for the reference! (I specifically searched for "no sound" but didn't find this article on my own.)
