I have Disk Warrior 3.xx Ive never run it. it says that varous files are out of order on my various HD's somewere between 30% on some and 60% on others. the lines are very solid, not like the fragmentation I remember in OS 9.

I was underthe impression that in X each time you added someting to the HD as an update it defragmented the drives then, so this is really not an issue.

Id hate to run something I do not really need and have some catastrophie like a power outage!!!!!

let me know

The graph is Disk Warior doesn't refer to actual file fragmentation. I'm not exactly sure what it does mean, but DW is not a de-fragmentation tool. However 30-60% directory out-of-order-ness (whatever that means) seems kinda severe. You can run DW and create a new directory without overwriting the old directory, though, as replacing the old directory is the absolute last step, and requires an "okay" dialog confirmation after you've had a chance to review the changes.

How often do you have power outages where you are? The actual replacement of the directory with the new one only takes about 30 seconds.

Power outage is rare. 3x/year. but with my luck? Im jsut wondering what th out or order-ness really means and it its that important.

I used to run DW in 9 a lot. I recall what you say about the end taking only a short time. I have a new DW comming next week. Ill wait for that and hope I get more comments on what the O of O means.

thanks rotuts

This is why you've got a full, up-to-date backup, right? Right??

Well CV
I have four HD of 250mb each. I only have partial BU due to the sizes, mostly recorded shows from my two TV cards.

but I did get a new HD on sale for 70 $ and will partially fill that.

odd no one is responding as to what the order-ness means!

The DiskWarrior graph shows the ordering of the entries for the files in the directory of your hard drive. If a lot of them are out of order, it can affect performance similar in concept to when a file is fragmented, but in different situations. For instance, if a program want to get a listing of all the files in a folder, but the entries for those files are out of order, the file system will have to jump back and forth looking up all the entries for the files within the directory. If they're all in order, it can just read the all in one big chunk, which is much faster than having to jump around.

Just like file fragmenting, directory fragmenting tends to occur as you use your computer, and when DiskWarrior replaces your directory, the new directory is optimized with no files out of order, giving you a nice little speed boost. The graph can be used as a rough indication of how long it's been since you last run DiskWarrior on your drive. If a lot of files are out of order, it might be time to pop in your DiskWarrior CD and make sure your drive is all clean.
