Hi, I'm a little confused. Are AIM and iChat the same thing? I always thought iChat somehow uses AIM to make it work. If not, which do you prefer and why? Thanks a lot.

iChat uses the AIM protocol and links to the AIM network. You can use your existing AIM handle.
In essence, iChat is a separate application from Apple to IM with the AIM protocol.

Apple uses AOL's servers to run connect people running iChat.

That said the official AIM client on OS X has been dead/dying for years.
