I haven't been a big fan of Opera at all, but this version is actually very good. It's super fast at everything and the interface is finally sorted out. If I had been on a slower Mac, I'd use it full-time.

Nice! Such a huge difference from... err, whatever version it was I had installed before (7? 7.5?). Great to see they finally got the interface looking properly.

I think you get used to the ads very quickly—I know I never notice them anymore...

Now I'm debating whether to stick to Safari (which is the more Mac-like of the two, and generally looks better), or whether to start using Opera (which seems slightly faster, and also has some features that are sorely missing in safari—see my little rant(s) here).

Hmm... decisions, decisions...

Interface looking properly??

Opera is butt-ugly, and does almost nothing properly. No throbbing controls, no Panther-style tabs, wrong text-style in controls, wrong popup-buttons, no text drag & drop, wrong text selection behavior etc. pp.

Butt ugly
Well, it's not as pretty as Safari, but it's coming along nicely. With a good skin (haven't checked for new ones yet), you can go a long way.

Throbbing controls
What the hell is that? A Google search yields only one result, and that's something to do with race cars...

Panther-style tabs
Again, skins.

Wrong text-style in controls
Huh? Sorry, I don't get quite what you mean here either... If you think a text-style is wrong, just change it. What do you mean by 'in controls'?

Wrong pop-up buttons
What exactly is a pop-up button? Any button within a pop-up window?

No text drag-and-drop
Err... okay... I wouldn't know, I don't think I've needed to drag-and-drop text.

Wrong text selection behaviour
Specify? How is it 'wrong'? Selecting text seems to work exactly as in Safari for me...

Skins are sooo 3 years ago.

I had Opera installed for approximately 5 minutes. I'm a huge fan of Omniweb (http://www.omnigroup.com) which I've paid for (student price, granted). Once you've used a browser whose interface is clearly geared for OS X, and whose feature-set I've yet to see matched in an OS X browser, it's hard to look elsewhere. [I still like Firefox quite a bit though and will be closely monitoring its progress]

Opera 8 is really nice, IMHO. I currently use it all the time for web development, because one can set it up to not use any cache whatsoever -- very handy when testing pages with flash content. (Safari seems to like to keep 'em in its cache, and OmniWeb doesn't like Flash at all.)
I wonder if Opera would be as nimble as iCab if they lost the RSS and E-mail and what-not they build in.

btw, a little tidbit. Opera ASA says they will be moving to XCode in the next major release of Opera.

Hmm, considering that Nokia is even dropping Opera for Safari (or close to it) for its Series 60 web browsers ...
