when i open dashboard very large apple widget open. I can seem to make them smaller, right now they are really too big to be usefull all the itime
but more bothersome when they are open the screen dims that I really don't like
am I missing something here/

You can close any widgets you don't want to use by holding option and clicking their 'x' button.
The screen behind the widgets is supposed to dim, so that you can distinguish from the dashboard layer and the rest of the computer.
What are you trying to use dashboard for? Perhaps you don't even need to use it.

Well thanks as im a real nubie on the widgiet thing I was hoping to say find a few interesting ones and lay them to the side and have them run ' in the background' as they say for their entertainment value sort of. I like the idea of a dictionary and thesaurus as small apps to click on from time to time.
but I don't care for the dim screen. but as I say Ive not used 10.4 much and won't be able to until my AlchemyDVR gets updated.
but thanks for your help rotut

the widgets will only be visible while you have dashboard active. when you click outside of it, they will disappear. there's a program that lets you run dashboard widgets as regular apps.. not sure what it is though.

That program is called Amnesty. With it you can also set a widget's window level, opacity, click-through, etc. Supports multiple widget layouts, auto-refresh, etc. Supports many third-party widgets running under 10.3.9. too.
And there's also the dev mode trick if you don't mind your widgets floating over everything on your desktop all the time.
