I know there are bunches of programs that allow you to create custom icons, especially for folders, etc.

I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive that would allow two teen-agers to create icons for use in ichat. I'm not sure that that's the same as programs such as CandyBar.

I know people here must have some programs they use for this kind of play. Any suggestions? Ease of use would be paramount here.

Gimp.app is a good freeware image editor.

So essentially, it's all just image editing (shows how much I know about this kind of stuff. I just take the icons that come with the programs and don't worry about it!).

We already have photoshop elements, so I guess I'll take a look at applying it to make icons.

yes, the trick is to make the icon large (256x256) then when its done, flatten the image against a transparent background, resize them to the correct size and save as a PNG 24, that way it will keep its transparency and shadows.
