Best app out there for newsreading hands down.
I used to be an avid MT-Newswatcher user.
But this app is just great.
What wou;d make it even better.. would be to give it a unified look like mail.app
With the blue sidebar and everything.
Or make it an option.

Sure, I like it. It's been out for like 1.5 years, so I guess I should say "welcome to the new millennium."

Actually it has stopped posting my messages.
Or posting most of them anyhow.
Oh well.
Time to go back to MT

I love Unison, it's one of the best Mac apps with no equivalent in the Linux-Windows world. Personally, I use it to listen to music on the mp3 binary groups all day long, and there are a few specialty groups I find useful (no, no, not those newsgroups).
The guys at Panic are very responsive to feedback and suggestions. Send them any ideas you have.

I've always found that it times out a lot on groups and never retries like some other apps

Bumpity-bump. This has been driving me crazy lately. I assumed it was a problem with the NNTP server, but I tried out MT-Newswatcher, and it never timed out. Just retried longer. But MT's interface just seemed so horribly dated. Plus I paid for Unison. Anyone heard of any secrets for making it retry longer?
(I suppose I could ask Panic, but I tend to come here before trying to get official support.)

Seriously, ask the developers. Contact them through the website; 10-to-1 they'll look at the problem for you or have a suggestion.
Also, I recommend paying a few bucks a month for an account on Panic's news servers if you use Usenet a lot. It is incredibly fast and retains messages for far longer than my old ISP did.

I like Unison's interface a lot, but it seems to miss articles for me quite often.

I haven't missed any articles (AFAIK), but I have had the app crash a few times for me (about once a week).

Are you sure it's Unison? Usually it's the host NNTP server that misses or loses messages.
I have never experienced a Unison crash (although it has a few rare bugs that prevent it from being usable until you re-start it).

Previewing large #s of images in the Images window tab will occasionally result in a crash for me.

I have the occasional crash, but the time-out problem is really annoying. Is it me, or did this just start not too long ago? Maybe it's a Tiger/update thing?
Also, am I the only one who didn't know to regularly clear the message cache? I noticed a 2+GB folder in my Library...but it thinned out once I cleared my cache in Unison.
{Sidenote} Anyone recommend a good/cheap Usenet provider? Comcast kinda sucks.

I can get Unison to crash repeatedly by queueing up a bunch of downloads, then:
Opening up two or more news groups that are pulling new headers simultaneously
and/or
Closing a window that is currently downloading an image I selected by 'View as Message...'
Before the latest version, It used to crash when clicking on the 'next' button when viewing as message during an image download. The latest version fixes this by disabling the 'prev' and 'next' buttons until the image is fully downloaded. Since I can get it to crash when closing the window in the middle of an image DL I suspect they didn't fix the bug itself, merely coded the UI to minimize that situation.
I would gladly pay money for an OSX newsreader that will look at where each post was cross-posted, then pull those headers from those groups in an attempt to find any missing pieces. Effectively displaying a metapost that spans groups.

I use Giganews. I've got the Silver service (IIRC). Something like 25GB/month for $11. And that's a lot o' pr0n!
Actually, it was cheaper per GB than the service offered by Panic when you download Unison.
