Hi all,
As I'm about to embark on the path of a PowerMac DP2.7, I'm curious if anyone has any experience running VPC 7?
Can anyone give me an indication of how it runs Windows XP? Is it significantly faster than on other Mac systems that you've tried? I've run it on a 1GHz PowerBook, and while useable, I wouldn't write home about the performance - but surely on a DP2.7 it should run quite well, yes?
Cheers,
WJ.

It will run faster but not all that much. How much ram is installed cause how much you allot is a major factor.
Until they tap into the GPU, speed will be mediocre at best.

I've used it on a 2.5DP before and it runs... but if you have been using XP on a PC of >1GHz then I wouldn't be selling it/throwing it out just yet

Anyone else trying it on a DP 2.7 G5?? It would be great if the program was at least decent with it.. I'm using it now on my DP 1.25G4 and it's well... Ok...

Is there a marked improvement in speed by running Windows 2000, or is XP with the themes and other effects turned off just as fast?

I've been running XP on my DP 2.5 GHZ machine. It's slow! I've disabled all the eye candy and alloted a gig of memory to the Virtual PC. Still SLOW.
If you really need to use a PC program, invest $300 and get an actual PC computer.
I don't believe a 2.7 will be any different.

There is a marked improvement if you run Windows 2000 Server Advanced as your Win partition. Flies pretty nice on my 23" Cinema and 1 Ghz Cube. and if it flies on that setup...

Is Virtual PC actually optimized to make use of the G5 and even moreso, Dual G5's???

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong.
I remember reading that the G5 didn't support some of the endian features that the G3 and G4 chips have, meaning that it involves extra work for a G5 to perform some operations.
Also, I haven't seen it use more than 100% processor utilization on my dual G5...

Disabling what services and graphics? I would like to tweak my XP install.

Power,
Are you running the latest VPC? I think it's 7.x now. But according to this website (VPC homepage) , it does say G5 support? But what does support mean? a) it'll run or b) it's actually optimized to take advantage of them...

I doubt VPC is optimized for the G5. I really doubt there's a whole lot of G5-specific optimization you could do with it unless they decided to add 64-bit support to VPC. As power142 said, the G5 has to do some extra work converting between endians because it doesn't have the pseudo-little-endian mode that earlier PowerPCs did. I think "G5 support" means supporting those conversions that VPC needs to run on a G5.

Hmm, maybe we should start looking for the Mac Mini equivalent of a PC so we can just use a KVM to add to our systems...

Mike, I'm running 7.02, running without hitch under Tiger (virtual switch networking broke after upgrading to Tiger). I think the answer is (a) it'll run, in that it does run (version 6.x used to barf saying that the processor was unsupported), but I used to have a MDD 1.42DP (hence Power142 ) and it ran almost as quickly on that baby. Most operating systems I've booted in VirtualPC report themselves as having a 600MHz processor, but I don't remember what the MDD used to report.

Have you considered buying/obtaining a cheap PC and using Remote Desktop? To me, this seems like a far more elegant solution... no huge disk images to store on your Mac, no pegging your own CPU, and much faster performance.

I don't know what Web Jimmy's needs are, but some people don't have the room or inclination to have a big ol' ugly PC sitting around. I also wouldn't want the mess of extra cords and wires that would come with a PC. If your need for Windows is limited (like checking websites in IE or something), VirtualPC is a pretty nice solution.

My need for Windows is pretty limited, but I just got sick of using Virtual PC.. it's just way too slow, takes too much effort and patience to keep Windows up-to-date, and at the time it needed really large disk images for some reason. My Remote Desktop solution allows me to get in and out of Windows effortlessly.
I'm not trying to suggest that this solution is for everybody, your point about the extra cords is well taken, but I just wanted to chime in that RDC is perfect for limited Windows use, IMHO.
