Can anyone recommend a good CD ripping program for a mac newbie?

I need a ripper that goes from cd --> .wav

iTunes can rip as .wav.

Yep:

1) Launch iTunes
2) Open the Preferences pane (Apple + , with the keyboard, or Menu bar -> iTunes -> Preferences)

3) Click on the Importing section
4) Select WAV Encoder from the drop-down menu beside Import Using
5) Tweak the Settings according to your quality/file-size needs, then click OK
