for some reason... now when i try to play videos off the internet or even older ones that i have saved...it says that the codec isn't supported...even on videos i have had and have watched a thousand times. Anyone know what is going on or no how to fix it?
p.s. the video plays, after it gives the error message, but there is no sound

You really don't like giving any details do you... must be porn...
Assuming that you are trying to play things through QuickTime Player, to which you had added the DiVX or 3vix codecs to (to take over things that resemble MPEG4[1])... and then you probably went to QuickTime 7 or upgraded to 10.4 and didn't bring that codec along.
Now the non-correct MPEG-4-like videos (read: porn) you are downloading is not playing because rather than having the correct form of audio it has embedded mp3 sound (which is expressly not supported in the standard because it leads to really bad sound syncing).
The solution is to get one of the codecs that support this sort of thing, or use MPlayer or VLC to handle them as those two projects are simply collections of codecs for those broken implementations of Divx/MEPG-2/MPEG-4/H.264 with a player slapped on top.

I've had this happen as well. I believe I narrowed it down to something connected to tiger and updates to vlc/mplayer w/ their use of corevideo. I also had everything start working again spontaneously, but it had nothing to do with any of larkost's suggestions.

Did nobody of you guys realize that markb was talking about WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER and NOT DivX/MPEG4/XviD?????
Try to find out when (with what kind of video/audio codec) your sound isn't working and I might be able to help!
And try MPlayerOSX if it can help - many (but not all) WMV movies do work quite well with it (+ 99% of all other movie formats)!

Badidea, you're the one not understanding. The issue has nothing to do with codecs. This is regarding files that were playing perfectly one day....and then not the next. The tell-tale sign being the issue described....having an error message display via WMP, and having the file then subsequently play anyway minus sound. Once this occurs, I've seen it also spread to other media players (quicktime/vlc/mplayer). The files will play, but with no audio, whereas only days prior they were perfectly fine.
I've seen a few isolated posts on a myriad of boards regarding people who've also had this problem. Everyone of these posts, it seems, is eventually followed up by another stating that the problem cured itself. I'd love to find someone who has some substantive details about this random issue, but pontificating about codecs, when that isn't the problem, isn't terribly edifying.
