Maybe this is common knowledge, but this struck me as unusual.

You can open a plain text (.txt) file in QuickTime. It will show it as a paragraph by paragraph slideshow. (I first noticed this in QuickTime 7; no idea if it works in earlier versions.)

I wonder why this functionality was built into the app. It looks very nice. I guess it might be useful to public speakers. Particularly if there were a way to control the rate of slides, or build chapters in so you could advance to the next paragraph by keystroke.

It's just all in all kind of unexpected. Was anyone else aware of this? Does anyone know why it's there?

I think it's a function of Quicktime text. It works at least in QT 6, very possibly earlier versions too. You can use tools like TitleLab to further customise the text track, editing stuff like font, size and timing.

It even works in the Windows version of QuickTime. A very neat option!
