I'm using Office 98 on a G4 laptop, running OS 9.1
I accidentally clicked something (don't know what) and now my toolbars look different, and I can't get them back to the original way they looked.
What they used to look like: Standard toolbar at top of screen, with formatting toolbar below it. Drawing toolbar at the bottom of the screen. All three toolbars are less than full screen in width, with the remaining horizontal space filled with solid gray filler.
What it looks like now: Formatting toolbar somehow got moved to the bottom of the screen, and now sports a mini-title bar (which it did not have before). (I don't know what those floating mini-windows are called, but we've all seen them in various programs). Also, now the Formatting toolbar no longer has its gray filler to the right.
What I have tried: I dragged the toolbar back to the top, then unclicked and clicked it off and on under the View/Toolbars menu. The toolbar stays put t the top, but still has the mini title bar and no gray filler to the right.
Why is this important: When I open a file, the file opens full-sized against the standard toolbar and UNDER the floating formatting toolbar. This hides the first row or two of data (usually the column headings). So each time I open a file, I have to: (1) shorten the window (via the bottom-right corner), (2) drag the toolbar down below the floating formatting toolbar, then (3) relengthen the window (via the bottom right corner) so that it fills the screen to the bottom. I use a lot of different Excel spreadsheets, and it is very aggravating to do this EVERY TIME I open a file.
How do I get the Formatting toolbar to look like it used to and not look like a floating mini-window (or whatever they are called)?
Doug

You haven't just enabled the formatting palette in the View Menu have you, though by the sounds of it is more than that.

I agree, sounds like you might be looking at the 'Formatting Palette' which floats about and is the only toolbar-type thingy in Excel which has its title above it. You can move all the other (regular) toolbars around, but they do not show their names.
That said, I cannot replicate your grey filler to the right of any of the toolbars, so maybe we are looking at something different.
Your toolbar settings are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Excel Toolbars(x)
where 'x' relates to the version of Excel you are using. You could trash this to get you back to the default settings maybe,

The OP is using Excel 98, which AFAIK, did not have floating palettes. I could be wrong, though.
Your preferences should be within the System folder, Preferences. Trash anything to do with Excel.

Thanks for the suggestions. Trashing the Excel Toolbars(8) in the Preferences folder did the trick.
