I have decided to close my .mac account as soon as it is up this year, so...I wasn't sure where to put this but if anyone can hook me up with a gmail invite (pm me) it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Mail works great with gmail. There's even a detailed description with pictures on gmail's website on how to set it up with Mac Mail.

do you guys have gmail set to archive, delete, or leave a copy in your inbox?

I am going to be accessing this through pop on my blackberry as well, if that makes a difference.

What is archive? Does it count towards your space?

I have it set to archive. After Mail downloads my inbox, Gmail puts it all in the archive. That means, it isn't there, but it isn't deleted. You can access it anytime by clicking the "All Mail" link.

It counts towards your space, but that really shouldn't make much a difference. They give you 2+ gigs of space, adding more all the time. For example, I've had gmail for 4 months, archived EVERYTHING, and I'm at 2% of my total space.
