What are ID3 tags? Where do they come from? If they're "broken" in my iTunes library, how do I fix this? How do they get "Broken"? What does a "broken" tag look like in iTunes?

ID3 tags are metadata. Usually, what the artist, album name, genre, album, art, etc.

Click on a music file or files and hit Apple i. To change a track name, you must edit each track by track. For group info (such as album, artist and genre), you can edit en masse.

Additionally, ID3 tags only exist for MP3s. Other file formats have different kinds of metadata stores, which, like ID3 tags, are kept in the files themselves. You can edit them with iTunes or other apps like MediaRage. Information about files of a format that does not support metadata is stored in the ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library file. They come from either editing them by hand, or when ripping the files most ripping software will search the CDDB for track names, etc.

I have no idea what you mean by "broken."
