I am just watching a PBS programm about the string theory. I'd like to store the files on my HD to bring them to a friend without broadband access and for archiving purposes.
How can I save those files to disk. Is there an app that can perform this, a workaround (like an invisible cache folder) or some magic terminal commands?
Link to the files: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html

Quicktime should let you save it in cache, then you can recover it from there. It does in QT Pro at least. Have to set it in Preferences.

Wow, someone sure went through a lot of trouble to keep those real urls as hidden as possible. (Disclaimer: There's probably an easier way, but I did it the long way around.)
The file in the html source is actually just the controller and stuff, eu.mov (a reference movie, basically). Opening that in HexEdit gives the filename of another file (nova_eu_3012c01_ref.mov) that resides in the same path as the first. You see by the filename that that too is a reference movie. So download, open in HexEdit and you see three more filenames (nova_eu_3012c01_mp4_ref.mov, nova_eu_3012c01_hi_ref.mov, nova_eu_3012c01_lo_ref.mov), all reference movies. Jeez... Ok, we take the hi-ref one, download, open in HexEdit, and... nova_eu_3012c01_hi_ref.mov. wtf? Same procedure again and.. well.
To be honest I've confused myself with all the reference file I have in my download folder now.
Long story short:
Hour 1, chapter 1: http://a388.g.akamai.net/5/388/142/3...c01_hi_100.mov
I can't possibly start checking every location as it's 3.30 in the morning, but the path seems to stay the same for the rest. Just change the filename at the end.
nova_eu_301 2c 01_hi_100.mov, bold is which hour (starting at 2, oddly enough) and italic is chapter. Hour seems to go from 2-4 and chapter from 01-08. Good luck.
Edit: And in the 10 minutes it took me to research this, someone came up with an easier solution.

It didn't require pro, but that only works in QT 6 and earlier. In QT 7, the cache files are munged and unplayable -- the player refuses to open them.

Jacke, thanks! Works like a charm. I used your direct links and made a simple html file that contains all eight chapters of all three hours. If you or someone else is interested, it's here to find.
