I would like to be able to sort the "sent" folder by who I sent the mail to.

When I add a 'To' field in the column, it is added for every folder, not just the sent folder.

Can folders have custom field headings?

Unfortunately not. The selected columns apply to all the folders for some strange and unknown reason. The only exception is the Sent folder which automatically substitutes the To column with the From column. IMO, this is serious design flaw with Mail and nearly makes it unusable if you are the type that wants to have a lot of folders that are organized the way that YOU want them to be. Nearly all other major email programs allow the user to specify the columns displayed and the sort column by folder. The fact that Mail doesn't do this is just plain laziness IMO because it is certainly been around long enough to have such basic functionality.

That's too bad. I wanted to keep an "archived sent" folder with subfolders by year.

On the one hand I find myself disappointed, coming from Linux, with features lacking in MacOSX. On the other hand, there is more than one way to organize email, and keeping it in the main Sent folder and relying on spotlight might be an option.

A Thunderbird spotplugin would be welcome...
