I wanted to make a backup DVD for my Spiderman DVD so I ripped it using ISOlater and the ISO file ended up being 7.3GB. I want to compress it to 4.36GB so I can burn it onto a blank DVD-R. Are there any freeware programs that will let me do this?
Thanks.

I'm afraid you'll need to get a dual-layer DVD burner. You can't really make the file much smaller while still being playable, so the only solution is a larger disc. I wasn't aware that Spider-Man came on a dual-layer disc, but it's not too surprising.
Even if keeping the ISO playable isn't important, you're not going to find anything capable of compressing the file that much. Compression works by finding repeated sequences of bits in a file and replacing them with smaller codes. For example, a sequence of five spaces might be replaced with "S5": five bytes becomes two in this case. However, the audio and video are already compressed, so there aren't going to be very many repeated sequences; the software which compressed the video/audio already took care of them. Even when there are repeated sequences, they'll be much smaller than before, so the compression won't be able to do as much.
I'm sorry; I know this isn't much help. However, I'm not sure there's much you can do.

Of course you could mount the ISO file and (re-)compress the VIDEO_TS folder with something like ffmpegX.

If you want free, find a PC and use DVDshrink. As for the Mac, theres a commercial app called DVDoneX that should do the same thing.

Of course, a highly-degraded DVD video (which it would end up being) can hardly be called a backup.
Get a DL burner, or split the file into two and burn two regular-size DVDs.

DVD2oneX or Popcorn will do it. The results aren't really that bad.

Depends on the compression and how you're gonna watch it.
On a regular TV, you won't notice. On a HDTV or Mac, you probably will notice some artifacts.

And if the main feature is bigger than a single-layer?
