I love using these commands to grab screenshots and window shots, but a little think frustrates me. It saves the file as a .pdf. How do I change that setting to save the file as a .jpg or .png or something different?!?!

Tiger saves screenshots as PNG. You can not change the format.

Actually you can change the format. The easiest way is to use a graphical utility like TinkerTool to do it.

As I don't have Tiger yet, where can I change it using Tinkertool? I couldn't find anything that looked related. Using Tinkertool 3.5.

TinkerTool 3.5, General, Screenshot File Format. You should know that the options TinkerTool displays are specific to different versions of the OS and so that option may not show up in Panther.

This application called "kunvert" will solve your problem....it will convert PNG files to JPG when you drag the pictures in it (in Dock).

Download
Kunvert

kunvert is nice, but dropjpg will give u a slightly higher-quality jpg.

tiger, there are lots of options: tinkertool, onyx. a conversion app like shotchoice (all at versiontracker.com)

& there's also the terminal...

EDIT: also, try, over an open window, command-shift 4, then space bar...then click.

You could try Control+Command+Shift+3/4 to copy the screenshot to the clipboard, switching to Preview and using Command+N to create a new document from the clipboard then Save As whatever format takes your fancy.

With Tiger, you don't even need to download a conversion app. With Automator, you can make a drag-and-drop JPEG converter app in a matter of seconds.

Sure you can.
Code:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
Log out then log back in.

You can also set pdf or gif as the screencapture type.

DING! DING! DING! Cybergoober, you are the winner (as long as it works)! That was the answer I was looking for. I knew how to change it into a .jpg by hand, I just wanted the computer to do it automatically for me.
Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot this was only for Tiger. It doesn't work in Panther... I guess I'm glad I'm getting Tiger this weekend!!
