I have an external 80 gig drive and have about 2000 songs on it, which is selected as my main drive in the advanced tab in itunes. When I disconnect my ibook from the drive and open itunes it reverts back to the internal drive. What can/should I do? I only want to store the music on the external drive.

Don't open iTunes without the external plugged in.

You could also try and duplicate the iTunes music folder from the external to your hard drive, then delete most of the songs from it. The playlists can remain. Then in iTunes > Preferences, set the duplicated/edit folder as the music folder to use. Then when you plug in the external, change the folder location.

And if you have another iTunes folder on your hard drive, delete it first.

Finally, if you use an iPod, set it to manually update so it doesn't get hosed going between the two. Repair permissions now and then when stuff is added or deleted from one library or the other.

Also, 12 minutes is a little short to be bumping your post. Be patient, the help you are getting is free.

You're opening iTunes with the external drive disconnected? If this is the case, then iTunes is reverting to the internal drive because it can't find the drive you wanted anymore. You'll need to reconnect the external drive in order to access anything on it.

12 hours and 12 minutes, actually

Also, what about just having an alias (symbolic link) to the folder on the external drive?
Just who are Britain? What do they? Who is them? And why?

How about instead of opening iTunes you have an AppleScript that will just die if the drive in question is not mounted, or else open iTunes? Name it "iTunes," replace its icon with iTunes's, put it in your Dock or whatever, and you're set.
