You probably had some DIVX codec installed before that you don't have now.

Well, that depends on what media formats you want to play. Like I said, it's most likely DIVX, since that's the only super-common format that QuickTime can't handle out of the box.

thanks

but the divx site sez divx "doesn't work w/OS X 10.4" and they're working to fix it

is there something else you meant to direct me to? is divx a PLAYER? or a codec? is there a site/link you can offer? sorry if i appear a bit thick...

thanks

Download VLC, set it as the default .avi player.
Download Microsoft Media Player, set it as the default .wmv, .asf player.

Quicktime should be able to handle almost everything else. (Especially if you install on the extra components.)

You need to install either of the following codecs (I don't think you can have both installed at a time):

http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
http://www.3ivx.com/download/index.html

tetenal - - it worked; that 1st link/DL/install fixed my problem. some ".avi" files hadn't been playing since my tiger upgrade. now they seem to work fine. thank you so much! (and thanks to all for your help)
