Now that I have a 20" iMac, I've come to really appreciate interfaces that either have different colors for odd/even rows, or websites that highlight a table row when you hover over it.

But since there are still a lot of interfaces that don't do this, I'd like to throw this idea out there for anybody who wants to run with it: An application that shows a "ruler" of sorts to make scanning rows easier.

Features:
• Make it a background app, and only appear when you press a key command
• Make it follow the cursor
• User-adjustable widths, with options for fixed widths or relative widths (for example, always 500px wide or 90% of a window's width)

So, um, yeah. I'm no programmer, so that's why I'm just kind of throwing this out there, because I think it's a fairly decent idea that would benefit a lot of people.

[edit]: And here's a quick mockup I threw together. It's rather ugly though, so if you can improve on it, please do so.

But I don't need a ruler for measuring – I just want a thin line that makes it easier for the eyes to cross large horizontal distances without getting lost (see the mockup picture).

Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Gotcha...well based off of G-Ruler, a widget implementation of your concept should be very easy to do for somebody who knows what they are doing!

It's just a 5px-deep yellow line that you can apparently drag around to visually divide tables in half or something.

I think what you actually want are better web designers.

That too. 'Tis a shame more don't realize what kind of wonders tr:hover can do.

I could probably cook up an app that does what he's requesting. No promises though... I'm pretty busy.

G-Ruler is great for measuring pixels, but unless you happen to have a 72dpi screen (if you're an iBook or PowerBook user, guess what? You don't!) the physical measurements (centimeters and inches) are useless. I informed the author of this and he just didn't seem to understand the problem. As far as I know, FreeRuler is the only app that gets this right, as it lets you set your DPI in the prefs and then it draws the ticks dynamically.
