Splitting a disk image into smaller segments?

How would I go about splitting some 8 gig disk images into 2 segments big enough to back up onto single layer dvd disks? Can't seem to find a way to do it in Disk Utility, and I don't have Stuffit Deluxe (if it even still exists) or anything like that to compress them into segments.

Any ideas?
