yikes.
helped a friend move her old imac to osx (10.3) today.
went well, backed up, did a clean install, moved her files back.
installed office, and...
most of her documents opened with really bad formatting (after being converted as text);
some documents wont open at all...
turns out she was using microsoft works versions 3 & 4 (i never even HEARD of ms works)
any way in osx to open these, formatted?
any ideas? she's hysterical (and i'm feeling bad too.. )
thanx!

See if Works will install under Classic and open the docs, then export as RTF?

Tip #1219 - Open Works in Word
Printer Friendly Version | E-Mail This Tip
Q:
Someone e-mailed me an MS Works file. Can I open it in MS Word?
A:
Word can open a Works file, no problem. Save the file to disk then go to Word. Click the little Open button on the toolbar and make sure Word is set to look for either all files or Works files. Once you locate the file, double-click to open .
Remember, a good word processor can open most types of word processing files. Just make sure that the "filter" is set to the file type your trying to open or to "All Files *.* "
In case you're wondering, a "filter," when used within a discussion about open dialog boxes, is the criteria that the program uses to display files. Usually, you can select this filter from the "File Type" drop down box.

If that doesn't work how about this?

----------
Can you open them with "Pages" and then save as "Word" Documents?
I hate .doc format... prefer workable PDF.

Go to a Windows Machine. Open the files in Works (gag) then save them as RTF, or I think you can export as DOC. Then bring them back into your Mac.
Works is Windows only so there in lies the rub. I hate Windows.

Try downloading a trial version of this package...
If it is a spreadsheet try his spreadsheet package "MarinerCalc".
Otherwise, you can go find a "DELL" mini store somewhere and lie about how your machine crashed and you need to convert these to word... (YOUR DELL MACHINE CRASHED) go on about how you are going to buy an Apple if you can't get this fixed right away....
When done, walk away and say "SUCKERS!"
I hate DELL. Can you tell? <smirk>

It won't convert the files, IIRC. I think Mariner Write will. Generally, the only thing that will convert Works files is MS Works (or the MS Word import filter for Works)
